~Handmade Designs With a Local Heart~
I remember when I went to Helen’s dorm room for a casual hang out. We were both studying Human Services at Northeastern University, but Helen was doing a little something more. Helen created a truly inspiring major for herself: Art for Social Development. It was a self-designed program synthesizing studio art, human services, and education. When I went to her place I saw these really cool prints that she had created, and I was absolutely in awe!
My sister pointed out to me the the DIY culture is starting to shift from a “do it yourself” to a “design it yourself” focus. For my wedding I was doing a little bit of both, and definitely wanted to have a TON of input on what we used for every aspect of our day. I immediately thought of Helen, when we started looking at invitation idea…. she did not disappoint!
Having followed her work through Linden Leaf Designs (her Boston based brand) I knew that she would be capable of producing exactly what I wanted. Even more that creating the PERFECT invitation for our wedding, Helen was incredibly easy to work with! I had many visions, as did my husband, and she was so patient with us, and worked tirelessly to make sure we were all on the same page with our vision.
Linden Leaf Designs is unique for a few reasons:
- Unusual Mediums – she uses paper cutout/collage style
- Work is inspired by communities she lives in
- She uses her art to “to create change in individuals and communities” – she is so awesome
- You are working with a person not a Factory invitation company, you know your art work/invitations will be inspired by YOU and have a very personal touch
- Transparency – I knew what made up every part of the cost, it was awesome
–I could go on and on but I will leave it at those 5.
In the end, I am inspired by Helen’s love of and devotion to her communities! As a teacher myself I often feel the desire to mix my art with my passion for education and community. Helen has done that :) I would absolutely recommend checking out her full site, and facbook page. If you are in Boston, check her out at one of the many hip markets she is part of (see website for details).
Are you loving Helen’s work as much as I do??
