Mini Session vs. Full Session: How to Choose the Right Photography Experience for You
Mini Session vs. Full Session | How to Choose the Right Milwaukee Photography Experience
When it’s time to book professional photos — whether it’s for your family, engagement, brand, or just because — one of the first decisions you’ll face is how much time, whether to choose a mini session or a full session.
At first glance, the difference may seem to be price alone. Mini sessions and full sessions are designed with completely different goals in mind, and understanding how they work will help you choose the amount of time that is just right for you!
Let’s break down the differences and help you make the best decision for your next session.
Time & Scheduling: How Long You’ll Spend in Front of the Camera
The most obvious difference is the length of the session.
Mini Sessions
Mini sessions typically last 15–20 minutes and are designed to be short, sweet, and efficient. They’re ideal for people who want just a few updated photos and don’t need a large variety of poses or locations.
Because they are scheduled back-to-back with other clients, mini sessions usually take place on specific dates and times I (your photographer) choose, often in fall or near holidays when demand for photos is high.Full Sessions
Full sessions, on the other hand, usually last 30–90 minutes (sometimes more). This gives you time to relax, warm up to the camera, and try multiple poses, backgrounds, and outfit changes if you’d like.
Unlike mini sessions, full sessions can be scheduled at a location, date, and time that works best for you, making them a much more flexible option if you have a busy schedule or want a specific season, location (home, fav park, etc), or time of day (like golden hour!) for your photos.
If you have very young kids who have limited patience for long shoots, mini sessions can be a ideal - quick and done before anyone has time to get to worn out. But if you love the idea of taking your time, getting a variety of images, more documentary feel, and not feeling too pressed for time, a full session is the better choice.
Image Quantity & Variety: What You’ll Get in Your Gallery
Another key difference is how many images you’ll receive.
Because mini sessions are shorter, you’ll typically get a smaller gallery with a carefully curated selection of your best photos. You can choose a limited number of photos included in your package, with the option to purchase additional digital files. This is perfect for people who just need a few pictures for holiday cards, social media, or a quick update.
Full sessions usually result in a much larger gallery with a wider variety of poses, angles, and candid moments. If you’re looking to fill an album, multiple outfits, create wall art, or simply love having plenty of options to choose from, and more story telling vibes a full session gives you that flexibility.
Personalization & Creative Freedom
One of the biggest differences between mini sessions and full sessions is the level of personalization involved.
Mini sessions are more structured — because of the time limit, I focus on getting a few key shots you are guaranteed to love, then some more lifestyle ones. You’ll likely be guided into a handful of tried-and-true poses, and the session will stay in one general location.
Full sessions allow for much more creativity. You can take your time trying different poses + activites, experimenting with movement, using multiple backdrops, outfit + location changes, and capturing those in-between candid moments that tell your story. I have more freedom to connect with you, for you to warm up, change up what is working and not in the moment - and create images that feel authentically “you.”
Cost & Value
Mini sessions can feel more budget-friendly, making them a great way to get professional-quality images at a lower price point - especially if you only need a handful of shots. They are often offered seasonally, which makes them a good choice if you want updated photos once or twice a year.
Full sessions are a bigger investment, but you’re paying for more than just time — you’re paying for a customized, one-on-one experience, with more variety, that results in a full gallery of images. The investment is worth it for those special milestones, engagement photos, extended family, lifestyle family photos - or a brand refresh. Especially if you would like to choose your own location, and have more time to lean into a relaxed session.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Here are some questions to consider:
How many images do I want?
If you only need a few photos, a mini session may be plenty. If you want a full gallery with a mix of candid and posed shots, go for the full session.Do I want to pick my own date?
Mini sessions are on set dates. If you need control over timing or location, a full session is better. How important is a personalized experience?
If you want time to settle in, explore multiple spots, or get creative, a full session offers that freedom. What’s my budget?
Mini sessions are more affordable, while full sessions are an investment — but one that gives you more variety, flexibility, and images.
The Bottom Line
Both mini sessions and full sessions have their place — it’s all about what you need right now.
Choose a mini session if you want something fast, and simple — like holiday photos, milestone updates, or a quick family refresh.
Choose a full session if you want a relaxed, customized experience, a wide range of images, and the freedom to pick your own date and location.
No matter which you choose, both options allow you to capture meaningful moments and create images that you’ll treasure for years. The best session is the one that fits your goals, schedule, what season of life you are in, and personality — and whichever you pick, I will make sure it’s an experience you’ll love.
I will guide you through the process, help you feel comfortable, and make sure the images truly tell your story — whether you’re celebrating an engagement, a growing family, or simply life as it is right now.
Whichever session you choose, you’re investing in more than just photos — you’re creating keepsakes you and your loved ones will cherish for years to come.
