Preparing for Your Family Photo Session 2.0

How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session
(Spoiler: It’s More Fun Than You Think!)

Family Session Season is coming up quick! But honestly? I believe all year long is family session season, whether we’re snuggled at home in your favorite cozy spot or playing outside in the snow.

That said, August through October tends to be my busiest time of year. If you’re hoping to book a session this season, now’s the time! Below are a few of my favorite tips to help you feel calm, confident, and fully present for your session, whether it’s your first or this is an annual adventure.

As a mama of two young boys (and a former elementary school teacher), I’ve been where you are - wondering if the kids will cooperate, stressing over outfits, maybe packing 42 snacks just in case. I get it. My goal is always to create a session that’s more experience than photoshoot, where we capture your family’s unique rhythm, laughter, and love in the most authentic way possible.

1. Expect Real Moments (Not Perfection)

This session is about documenting who you are: grass stains, giggles, and all. Especially if you have little ones, you can expect a mix of movement, cuddles, and maybe a few wild moments. And guess what? That’s perfect. Very few families sit still and look at one person at the same time in real life, so we won’t force that here either. Think of this as a family outing, more than a session. Talk with your kiddos about what to expect, and build it up as something that is special and fun for the week before. Just like you would talk about going to a special playground or event. I promise: when you relax into it, the magic shows up.

2. Time of Day Matters (But You Know Your Family Best)

Beautiful light happens in early morning and golden hour (that dreamy time just before sunset). I’m happy to recommend the best lighting windows, but you know your crew best. Choose a time when your kids are happiest, after a nap, post-breakfast, or even a little pre-bedtime adventure. The best session is the one where everyone feels good. Mini sessions offer both evening and daytime options!

3. Wear What Feels Good

Coordinating doesn’t mean matching. Pick a few colors you love and build from there - earth tones, neutrals, soft fall colors, patterns are great too. Comfort is key. If your little one’s favorite boots are rain boots? Rock them. If new shoes are part of the plan, break them in ahead of time. We want everyone to be able to move, play, and just be themselves. Once you book I will share access to Style + Select for outfit planning assistance.

4. Bring the Joy (and the Snacks)

Props are welcome, especially if they bring joy and feel true to your family. I recommend wooden neutral options, a favorite stuffed animal, a blanket to sit on, a favorite toy, even your pup! Anything you bring should be something you’re happy to see in your photos. And always, always bring snacks. (I recommend avoiding “if you cooperate you get this” language if that isn’t the norm for your family)

5. Choose a Meaningful Location

Where does your family love to spend time? Parks, beaches, grassy fields, wooded trails, your own backyard, the city - these all are great. I’m happy to recommend Milwaukee-area gems if you’re unsure. Want to stay home? Let’s do it. In-home lifestyle sessions are cozy, meaningful, and full of personality. We can also play in the yard or explore your neighborhood! I have a light drenched studio in Bayview that is alway a back up or primary plan option too!

6. Session Length: Let’s Talk About It

Not sure how long is best? Let’s chat. For younger kids, 30–60 minutes is often the sweet spot. Mini sessions when offered are quick and fun too (15 min). If we’re at a location with multiple areas to explore, a longer session might be perfect. Not sure how your kids will do? We can always start with 30 and extend if things are going great. I’m flexible, and your comfort is the priority.

7. Lean Into the Love

At the heart of it all, this session is about your connection. Loving on your kiddos, laughing with your partner, holding hands, getting muddy, all the moments that make your family yours. This is your time together, uninterrupted, without the pressure of perfection. You don’t even need your phone — I’ll take care of capturing it all.

8. Trust the Process and Have Fun!

This might feel like a big deal (and it is!), but it doesn’t have to be stressful. I’ll guide you every step of the way, adapt to your kids, and create space for you to just be. My sessions are built around play, comfort, and presence. In the end you get magical, heartfelt images that truly reflect your family in this season.
